May 2009 While the Steering Committee is reviewing the draft Plan, the study team is busy preparing for the June public meetings. These public meetings will give everyone an opportunity to comment on the Plan and Map. More information on the public meetings...
April 2009 The Bike Map Subcommittee met a final time to review the back side of the bike map. The group had great suggestions on the routes, bridge graphics, and rules of the road graphics. The assistance from this dedicated group has made this map process a real success.
January / February 2009 Happy New Year! The start of 2009 was consumed by work on the development of the Draft Plan. It was finally time to compile the data collection efforts and public outreach efforts and begin assembling a plan that is both meaningful and implementable. The study team also spent time updating the Statewide Bicycle Map with the suggested changes from the December 2008 Steering Committe meeting.
December 2008 The Steering Committee met for the fourth time in December. t this meeting, the Committee reviewed the latest draft of the Benchmarking Analysis as well as the latest version of the Statewide Bicycle Map. In addition, CTDOT presented the Bicycle and Pedestrian Design Review Checklist and Questionnaire. The purpose of the Checklist and Questionnaire is to ensure that bicycle and pedestrian travel needs are accounted for when planning transportation improvements. The presentation was well received by the Committee and most agreed that they learned new information.
October 2008 In October, we hosted four public meetings in different areas of the state to present bicycle and pedestrian information collected to date. Items of discussion were goals and action strategies, benchmarking review, crash data, and draft suitability index for the bicycle map. We had a great turnout at all of the meetings. Thank you to all who who attended and provided input!
September 2008 September was a busy month! The study team presented the draft suitability analysis first to the Bicycle Map Subcommittee and then to the Steering Committee. While there were suggestions for improvement, both groups generally approved of the analysis and methodology. The results of the benchmarking analysis and other data collected were also presented to the Steering Committee for review. Finally, the study team spent time preparing for the October public meetings.
August 2008 The project team conducted benchmarking interviews with state staff from Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Wisconsin, and Oregon during the month of August. These interviews were with bicycle and pedestrian coordinators within the state departments of transportation. Three of the states, Oregon, Wisconsin, and New Jersey, are considered to be leaders in bicycle and pedestrian planning. The other four states, New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Rhode Island, are neighboring states.
July 2008 The project team wrapped up its outreach meetings with the 15 regional planning agencies in mid-July. Representatives of the agencies were specific denoting their bicycle and pedestrian needs in their region, as well as their desires for the overall Plan and Map Update. Thank you for the great suggestions. We look forward to incorporating them in the Plan and Map.
June 2008 June was a busy month. In the beginning of the month, the Bicycle Map Subcommittee met for the first time to discuss the Map Update. Participants each supplied maps from other states / municipalities, and discussed the positive features on these maps. The team plans to incorporate many of these suggestions in the revised Statewide Bicycle Map. The Steering Committee met for the second time in June, with a large number of the committee members biking into the meeting. Thanks to Sandy Fry for organizing the ride! Finally, the project team began its outreach meetings with the 15 regional planning agencies.
May 2008 Much of May was spent preparing for June meetings. In addition, the team spent time collecting data for incorporation into the Bicycle Map Update.
April 2008 The project team met with the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism to discuss the potential for tourism components in the Statewide Bicycle Map. The Commission was interested in the project, and the agencies agreed to meet again when the map development is further along.
March 2008 The first Department of Transportation in-reach meeting was held in March. The purpose of this meeting was to begin coordinating the Statewide Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan Update with other ConnDOT departments’ efforts and guidelines. Baseline data collection continues as planning documents from regional planning agencies were collected and reviewed. The state benchmarking analysis is underway as well.
February 2008 The first Steering Committee Meeting was scheduled for April 2008. The project team met with staff members at ConnDOT to collect GIS data files to use as a baseline in the Map Update. Baseline data collection has begun.
January 2008 The project has begun! ConnDOT staff met with the consultant team to kick-off the data collection and planning process. ConnDOT began the Steering Committee formation process by contacting all members of the larger Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee and asking for recommendations as to who should serve on the smaller, more focused Steering Committee.
